Women, Business and the Law 2021
Women, Business and Law 2021 is the seventh annual installment carried out by the World Bank, in which, through a series of studies, they measure the regulations that affect the economic opportunities of the world’s women each year in 190 economies. This is a project that presents eight structured indicators around women’s interactions with the law as their lives and careers progress: mobility, workplace, salary, marriage, parenthood, entrepreneurship, assets, and pensions.
This year’s report updates all indicators as of October 1, 2020 and generates evidence of the links between legal gender equality and the economic inclusion of women, which, amid the global pandemic, has been strongly threatened due to the existence of barriers to their economic participation, for that reason, this study also encourages the reform of these discriminatory laws. On the other hand, it includes important findings on the various responses that governments have had to the COVID-19 crisis and pilot investigations related to the care of children and women’s access to justice. Finally, the economic decisions they make throughout their working lives are examined, and how these have been affected by the current healthcare context.
This study is a great contribution to make visible the role of women and how progress has been made in the different legislations over the last 50 years in matters of gender equality, which allows to produce debates about public policies related to gender equality greater economic participation of women.
